Ani Phyo: Return on Design: Smarter Web Design That Works
I helped develop the project, then co-wrote and edited the final version of the book, which details a seven-step, user-focused process for designing successful Web sites.
Karen Ogulnick, Ed.: Language Crossings: Negotiating the Self in a Multicultural World (Language and Literacy Series (Teachers College Pr))
Includes my essay, "Learning Chinese," about struggling to fluency in that language, trying to understand what it means to be a speaker of Chinese. My son contributed an essay about growing up tri-lingual - English, French, and Chinese.
Doug Millison: Firebrands: Building Brand Loyalty in the Internet Age
Co-authored with Michael Moon of GISTICS, Inc.), Firebrands explains how to build brands by creating and maintaining trusted interactive relationships with customers, using the Internet and digital media. From the dustjacket: "If you want to get venture capital, you'd better read this book. Companies will either brand or die. It's up to you." -- Guy Kawasaki, CEO, Garage.com, Palo Alto, CA.
David Siegel: Creating Killer Web Sites (2nd Edition)
This book, co-authored with David Siegel, was a pathbreaker. This book was Amazon.com's number five bestseller in 1997; the first edition was Amazon's number one bestseller in 1996. You won't find my name on the cover, but I am credited as Executive Editor to the Second Edition on the book's Acknowledgements page, which also includes a good description of the job I did as co-author to update the book, research and write new material, organize and manage the book development and production process, and coordinate contributions from several people in author David Siegel's web design firm, Studio Verso.
Moira Anderson Allen: Writing.Com: Creative Internet Strategies to Advance Your Writing Career
I contributed the section on online journalism.
I'm a writer, editor, and journalist with experience on projects for a broad spectrum of audiences.
Answering the single-most frequently asked question up front: Yes, I'm the Doug Millison who, in the early 1990s, created Morph's Outpost on the Digital Frontier, an innovative magazine that helped shape the community of interactive media development pioneers (the folks who went on to make the WWW a viable communications and publishing platform), plus the related Art Teco conference and trade show, and Daily Spectrum (currently edited under the title Spectrum by former Morph's Outpost editor, David Duberman) email newsletter.
I also developed Blaster, the first consumer magazine for interactive media screenagers, based on my original concept and editorial plan.
I built the first version of this web site back in the mid-1990s, when I developed and taught the first course in Online Journalism at San Francisco State University's Multimedia Studies Program.
This site is also the current location of www.OnlineJournalist.org, www.DougMillison.com, www.Millison.com, and www.Millison.org. Thanks for your visit.
Book News
In addition to the books in this page's sidebar, I helped write and edit Thorium to Hydrogen, published by DBI.
Freelance Journalism
I am available for journalism assignments, ready to create news articles, feature stories, and interviews on a broad range of topics, including the high technology business (with a focus on the Web and computer industries) and its cultural impact. I know China and speak fluent Chinese, and have a good understanding of Japan (I was Softbank's West Coast US correspondent) and Korea (where I lived and worked for a year). I speak, read, and write fluent French, and have good insight into French and broader European cultural and business issues, too.
Sample Articles
Simulating Planet Earth is an article I wrote recently for one of NEC's web sites.
In a different vein, Helping the Homeless . . . and Myself tries to explain at least part of the spiritual path I'm trying to follow these days.
Publications links to other articles of mine now available on the Web.
My resume provides a chronological account of all the major editorial projects and publications of my career to date, including links to those which are still available on the Web.
Editorial Consulting
I often work as an editorial consultant, helping organizations and individuals tell their stories and connect with their desired audiences, online and in books, newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and other publications.
I describe my Web editorial consulting approach in Online Journalism in the Web Design Process. If you need an editorial consultant, writer, or editor for a book, Web site, or other publication, please contact me by email so we can discuss your project.
Projects
I consulted on the overall Web editorial strategy and design, then wrote and edited most of the interface copy for the launch web site of low-power microprocessor company, Transmeta.
I helped SocialNet.com develop a long-range editorial development plan and helped to create several editorial elements for early versions of their site.
I also consulted with the design and development team to determine audience needs and editorial strategy, then wrote and edited the interface copy for the Humana recuitment web site and the launch version of the Office Depot e-commerce site.
My resume describes other editorial projects I've handled with links to some on the Web.
